IS-100.C Introduction to the Incident Command System

Overview
If you are looking to begin your training in the Incident Command System this is the place to start.  This is the instructor-led version of ICS 100, which can also be taken online.  The instructor-led version has been proven to be more effective for students who actually want to learn the principles covered in the course, because unlike the online version, this course features hands on exercises and a live instructor.  If you want to start out in ICS with a firm grasp of the basics, then you’ll want to take this class.

PLEASE NOTE: This course features a digital online course exam. Students must have FEMA SID Number and have access to a web-capable device in order to complete the exam and get their certificate.

This course is taught by a certified ICS Instructor approved by the Oregon Department of Emergency Management.

Class Format
Please note this class comes in several formats, please pay attention to which format you are selecting when registering.

  • In-Person: The class is held in person at one of our training sites.
  • Online Instructor-Led: The class is held online via Zoom, but is taught by a live instructor.  Students attend the class virtually using the Zoom platform.​
Description
ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training.  This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).  Students must attend the entire course in order to receive certification.  This is the instructor-led version of the online training course. 
We are an authorized provider of ICS training, all courses must be approved by the Oregon Department of Emergency Management.

The Emergency Management Institute developed its ICS courses collaboratively with:

  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG)
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • United States Fire Administration’s National Fire Programs Branch

At the completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the principles and basic structure of the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Describe the NIMS management characteristics that are the foundation of the ICS.
  • Describe the ICS functional areas and the roles of the Incident Commander and Command Staff.
  • Describe the General Staff roles within ICS.
  • Identify how NIMS management characteristics apply to ICS for a variety of roles and discipline areas.

Primary Audience

  • The target audience includes persons involved with emergency planning, and response or recovery efforts.
