Are you interested in becoming an armed security provider? The DPSST Armed Security Certification Upgrade course is the essential course for anyone wanting to carry a firearm while performing security services. Taught by instructors with real world experience, this course will give you all the essential tools and foundational skills you will need to work as an armed security professional in Oregon.  PLEASE NOTE: This is a handgun certification course only.  Rifle and shotgun certifications are separate courses.

Please do not bring any firearms or ammunition to the class or classroom until the range day. The Instructor will give you detailed instructions about this.

Required Equipment:​

  • This is an upgrade course. You MUST first complete the DPSST Unarmed Security Certification Course, be currently DPSST certified as an Unarmed Security Professional, or have prior instructor authorization to take this course
  • Valid form of government issued photo ID
  • Signed Liability Waiver (see below)
  • Duty Handgun(s)
  • Quality Duty-Type Holster(s)
  • At Least Three Magazines
  • Belt or Vest-Mounted Magazine Pouches for at least two Magazines
  • At Least 500 Rounds of Factory Ammunition for your Handgun
  • At least 5 dummy rounds (snap-cap) that will fit in your gun


According to updated DPSST rules, you must qualify with each type of handgun that you will be carrying on duty, if you carry different types.

Recommended Equipment:​

  • Pen or pencil
  • Notepad or paper
  • Kneepads (if you have trouble kneeling on the ground comfortably)
  • Duty uniform and body armor

Description

Approximate Length: 24 hrs
(Three 8-hour days, includes 1 hour lunch break each day.  Day 3 is done entirely at the range)
*​Classes may run longer or shorter based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to class size.

 

Class Format

  • In Person: The class is held in person at one of our training sites.
  • You must register for and attend the first day of the class to get access to the other days.

PLEASE NOTE: We no longer provide paper PS-6 forms.  If you would like a paper copy of your PS-6 issued upon completion of the course, you can print one out from the DPSST website and bring it to class.  Forms can be found on the DPSST website here.

Description

This course includes all the basic elements required to become certified in the state of Oregon as an Armed Security Professional. The class is taught by an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) certified Private Security Firearms Instructor and consists of book learning, exercises, and a range component. This course is intended for those looking to become an armed private security provider as well as those who are new hires and need to receive their basic armed certification. Certification is good for 2 years upon application acceptance, however an annual refresher and qualification is required every year. Please bring valid form of government issued photo ID to class.

This course covers a wide range of topics related to the armed security provider. We have added additional content we feel is critical for anyone wanting to work as armed security officer, including material from STOP THE BLEED, our Oregon Concealed Handgun, and Use of Force training courses. Upon successfully completing the course students have the opportunity to receive additional course completion certificates for both STOP THE BLEED and Oregon Concealed Handgun at no additional cost. Just indicate whether or not you would like to receive these additional certifications when checking out.

Convicted felons, those with a documented history of serious mental illness (individuals can be assessed by instructor for waiver to participate), or that have been convicted of domestic violence are not eligible for participation. Initial certification requires background check and fingerprinting conducted by Oregon State Police.

IF NOT CURRENTLY DPSST CERTIFIED:
​An application packet must be submitted to DPSST after conclusion of the course, the packet must include:

  1. PS-1 (Application for Licensure or Certification of Private Security Services Provider);
  2. A completed fingerprint card. A blank pre-printed FBI fingerprint card is included in the class packet.  Proof of completing Fieldprint or Livescan electronic fingerprints is also acceptable.
  3. The original Form PS-6 (Affidavit of Instructor and Private Security Provider Testing Results) documenting completion of the training.
  4.  Nonrefundable license fee (Includes background check fee).  THIS FEE IS SEPARATE FROM THE CLASS FEE AND MUST BE PAID TO DPSST DIRECTLY.
  5. NOTE: You must also complete DPSST Unarmed Certification and submit the applications for Armed and Unarmed at the same time.

IF CURRENTLY DPSST CERTIFIED AND ADDING ARMED CERTIFICATION:
​An application packet must be submitted to DPSST after conclusion of the course, the packet must include:

  1. PS-1 (Application for Licensure or Certification of Private Security Services Provider);
  2. Form PS-23
  3. The original Form PS-6 (Affidavit of Instructor and Private Security Provider Testing Results) completed as prescribed by OAR 259-060-0060​; documenting completion of the training required.
  1. Nonrefundable certification or licensure fees.  THIS FEE IS SEPARATE FROM THE CLASS FEE AND MUST BE PAID TO DPSST DIRECTLY.

​Eligibility:

Armed Private security providers must be:

  • At least 21 years of age; and
  • Must have earned one of the following:
  • A high school ​diploma; a General Education Development (GED) certificate; or a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited degree-granting college or university.
  • ​Be of good moral fitness as determined by a criminal background check, department investigation or other reliable sources. A lack of good moral fitness includes, but is not limited to, mandatory and discretionary disqualifying misconduct as described in OAR 259-060-0300. Security professionals must demonstrate the Core Values of: Honesty, Good Character, Public Trust, Fair Treatment of Others, Respect for the laws of this state and nation.

PLEASE NOTE: This range requires that all firearms be transported unloaded in a bag or case, unless concealed, on duty, or in uniform. Speed limit on all range roads is 15 mph maximum. They have a no tolerance policy on alcohol, no consumption, and you cannot have any in your vehicle, including empty containers.

    this class was outstanding Ben Bower my instructor was awesome. The way he taught the class was above and beyond what an instructor has to do. He made me more confident in myself and the handling of my weapon. I can’t wait to do my recertifications with Ben he is my number one instructor.
